Chris Petrella is a student at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studies with David Bilger. He started playing the trumpet when he was ten years old, and past teachers have included Michael Sachs, Michael Miller, and Keith Benjamin. Chris was a finalist in the Ictus International Trumpet Competition, the winner of the 2021 High School Solo Division at the National Trumpet Competition, and a finalist in the President’s Own Marine Band’s 2023 High School Concerto Competition.
What inspired you to become a musician?
My parents are both musicians.
Who are your all-time favorite composers and/or pieces? Why?
Bartók, Brahms, and Shostakovich
What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
I swam competitively throughout my entire childhood.
When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I enjoy staying active, spending time outside, and playing with my three dogs: Mia, Nico, and Steve.
Why did you choose the NRO?
I wanted to play a lot of exciting repertoire!
