Four questions with famed conductor JoAnn Falletta
The first woman to lead a major American orchestra (as Music Director for The Buffalo Philharmonic) and winner of two individual Grammy® awards, JoAnn Falletta has conducted orchestras all over the world. Breckenridge, however, is incomparable in her mind. Performing here many times over the years, the prolific recording artist and conductor returns on Aug. 2 to lead the National Repertory Orchestra through a heartfelt program featuring works by Roberto Sierra, Jonathan Leshnoff, Pablo de Sarasate and Sergei Prokofiev.

On July 29, The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) performs Disney’s The Lion King In Concert Live to Film, the 2019, PG-rated live action movie directed and co-produced by Jon Favreau. Like Disney’s original The Lion King from 1994, this version features German composer Hans Zimmer’s Oscar®-winning musical score as well as new recordings of the original songs written by GRAMMY®-winning superstar Elton John, GRAMMY®-winning lyricist Tim Rice, plus African vocal and choir arrangements by GRAMMY®-winning South African producer and composer Lebo M.

Midori channels memories from triumphant 1986 performance in upcoming revisitation of ‘Serenade’
One of the world’s most highly respected and acclaimed violinists, Midori returns to Colorado this weekend to perform with the National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) for two special performances in Breckenridge (July 22) and Denver (July 23). Among other classical favorites, the Japanese-born musician who moved to the U.S. and made her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11, will be performing the piece that largely made her famous – Leonard Bernstein’s “Serenade.”

The NRO performs Beethoven and Shostakovich – Symphonic Beginnings at 6 p.m. July 12 at The Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. Michael Stern conducts; Daniel Benedict makes solo debut in Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Concertino for Harp and Chamber Orchestra. Tickets are $5-$45.

“Jeffrey and Gabriel Kahane – Family Ties” is now “Stern Conducts Brahms and Schubert”
The National Repertory Orchestra has been looking forward to Jeffrey Kahane’s appearance on Saturday, July 1, as conductor and pianist for “Jeffrey and Gabriel Kahane – Family Ties” at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. Mr. Kahane, however, has tested positive for COVID-19.
Alumni Spotlight – Josephine Stockwell
Josephine Stockwell was a viola instrumentalist with the National Repertory Orchestra in 2018. She is now a member of the Israel Philharmonic and continues to use her orchestral talent to play for audiences around the nation and the world.

The National Repertory Orchestra receives support from many community partners, including Breckenridge and Keystone ski resorts. With grant support from Vail Resorts’ EpicPromise, this season’s guest artists and conductors will arrive via Epic Mountain Express to Summit County.
